Primary Sources:

Godzilla Vs Gigan (1972), Toho Co LTD, Jun Fukuda, Film, Accessed 27th September 2016

This is my first primary Film and is a perfect example of the change in representation and themes as well as genre of the Godzilla franchise in its long history especially in comparison to the first entry in the series. It has provided me with ample clips to use in my presentation.

Gojira (1954), Toho Co LTD, Ishiro Honda, Film, Accessed 27th September 2016

This is my second Primary Film and is used in direct comparison with my first film, it is a much darker, more impactful film even if the effects do not quite show the menacing message behind it. I have used clips from this film

King Kong (1933 and 2005), RKO (1933), Universal (2005), Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack (1933), Peter Jackson (2005), film, Accessed 28th September 2016

I have decided to use both of these films as one to directly compare the effect time has had on the genre with 72 years between each version of the same film.

Secondary Sources:

 "King Kong: A Comparison" Manapop.com, Mike Brooks, 2nd July 2015, Web Article, http://manapop.com/musing/king-kong-a-comparison/ , accessed 13th October 2016

I have chosen to use this source due to its explicit detail in the differences between the original film from the 1930's and the latter 1970's film as well as touching on the differences from the 2005 remake. it highlights the different changes to the story and how they affect the spectators as well as changes to genre, themes and effects of each film. This is all useful to my essay directly and provides many great examples to use in my work.

This source highlights the changes between earlier Godzilla films and those later in the series and how each one differs from the last and how changing cinema audiences are effected by each one as well as how we view earlier films now.

East Asian Cinema, David Carter, 2003, Book, accessed 16th November 2016

This book focuses on how Godzilla has effected the pop culture of japan alongside the medium of Anime, it provides plenty of useful info on the original production and reasoning behind the themes discussed in Godzilla.

These Two Sources both show the themes and ideals behind the creation of the films and also show a comparison of the changes over time as well as providing many clips that will prove useful in my presentation.

“The Rhetorical Significance of Gojira.”, Dissertation,University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Shannon Victoria Stevens, 1993. Print. Accessed 30th September 2016

this source is perhaps my most useful as it goes into depth on the significance of Godzilla as a character both in Japanese Culture but also the effect on pop culture after the original release.
"A brief History of Godzilla, our Walking Nuclear Nightmare", Motherboard.vice.com, Brian Merchant, 23rd August 2013, Web Article, http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/godzilla-is-our-never-ending-nuclear-nightmare, Accessed 2nd October 2016

This source reflects the changes between films and different approaches to the character to different directors and why the genre has changed so much over the years from the original till the time of the Article.

"The new 'Godzilla' reflects our current fears of nuclear and natural disasters", www.nydailynews.com, Ethan Sacks, 11th May 2014, Web Article, http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/new-godzilla-reflects-fears-nuclear-natural-disasters-article-1.1784809 Accessed 2nd October 2016

this Source shows how Godzilla has changed in his purpose from being a warning of nuclear threat to being a representation of a force of nature, and how he has been used to make an environmental impact from such changes and representations.

"King Kong (1933) Vs King Kong (1976)", MikesMovieCave.blogspot.co.uk, "Movie Mike", 31st January 2007, Blog, http://mikesmoviecave.blogspot.co.uk/2007/01/king-kong-1933-vs-king-kong-1976.html, Accessed 30th September 2016

this source also helps to compare two Kong films but in much more specific detail than the previous article on this subject and uses different examples to show the changes

"Old Films For New: King Kong", OldFilmsForNew.Blogspot.co.uk, "naomitalbotxx", 10th October 2013, Blog, http://oldfilmsfornew.blogspot.co.uk/, Accessed 30th September 2016

this post focused less on the differences of the 1933 film and the 2005 film and so helped me to bring the two together for a full comparison of not just what is similar but also what is different.

Rejected:

Primary Sources:

Godzilla Vs Hedorah (1971), Toho Co LTD,  Yoshimitsu Banno, Film

This film bares many of the same messages of Godzilla Vs Gigan but in a far more campy and childish tone. It also would have been more useful if the references to its messages were confined into clips as easily as Godzilla Vs Gigan however it requires watching the whole film to make sense so the clips were much harder to fit into my presentation.

Very poorly constructed arguments that were already made in a much clearer Source I already decided to use.

"Toho Motion Picture Company", www.Britannica.com, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Toho-Motion-Picture-Company#ref1027768, Accessed 2nd October 2016

Provided useful background info on the Production company behind Godzilla but none of it is particularly relevant

"Godzilla", www.Britannica.com, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Godzilla, Accessed 2nd October 2016

Interesting article on Godzilla himself and his personal history but again relevance is an issue

"King Kong 1933 Vs King Kong 2005" www.youtube.com, 11th January 2014, "VeganLuke", Video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJRQ7avh-aw, accessed 3rd October 2016

More focused on the visual changes than the changes in themes so more or less irrelevant to my point
